ㅤbiographyㅤㅤAdrianus is the illegitimate son of Dr. Cassius nan Asina, a well-known Garlean educator and scientist who established the School of Technology in Garlemald. While his famous father was celebrated across society as an innovative genius, his mother was a lowborn prostitute whom his father had impregnated in a fit of passion. Because of this, Adrianus was barred from ever using his father's surname and was treated like a leper in the Asina household. He grew up in the brothels where his mother worked, under the supervision of other women of the night.Adrianus grew up fast. He did not have a typical upbringing because he was obliged to pay his way as soon as he learned to read and write. Adrianus began as a lowly employee, forced to mop and sweep throughout the day, and witnessed firsthand the harshness of Garlean society. He soon grasped the struggle of people who have nothing and wished to remedy the wrongs of a society riddled with needless greed and extravagance. While Adrianus was estranged from his father, he was quite close to his mother. His mother taught him to read, and he learnt to write with the help of others at the brothel. Despite his less-than-ideal beginnings, Adrianus sought happiness wherever he could. However, that would change when he discovered a strange black stone concealed in the snow at the age of fifteen. It was a soul stone with the dreadful demon trapped inside it.Her name was Queen Mab, and she promised to grant his every want as long as he agreed to a contract with her.Adrianus, hesitant to believe whatever this talking stone stated, pocketed the soul stone and hastily returned to the brothel. He would frequently stare at the stone, passively listening to the whispery feminine voice that summoned him from beyond the Void. However, the child had no idea that such an artifact would cause such sorrow when the brothel was unexpectedly stormed by the soldiers.Garlemald has a complicated history, particularly in relation to the Reapers. They were once known as humble farmers who lived in the sun-drenched fields of southern Ilsabard, but they became cold-blooded survivors who sacrificed their minds and bodies for vengeance. When monsters from beyond the veil entered this world, these brave few ventured to confront these beasts by binding them to their souls for the sake of power. These Reapers were formerly the first line of defense for Garlemald and its people, but they were cast out and abandoned as the nation pursued technology and science over magick. The introduction of magitek rendered Reapers obsolete, and when some were proven to be insurrectionists against the Emperor, the practice was completely forbidden.So when word spread that a child was in possession of a nefarious magical stone, the Imperial Court dispatched its finest to locate the boy and his magical trinket. After all, magic is forbidden. The brothel where his mother worked was closed down, and everyone involved was jailed, including Adrianus and his mother. While the soldiers never found the stone, the testimony of others was allegedly enough to incarcerate them.Adrianus waited for his trial in the darkness of the Gelida Castrum, far from civilization. Because of his young age, he had a chance of receiving a pardon from the Emperor, but there was no guarantee. Fearing the worst, Adrianus' mother planned a strategy to save her son. She declared herself an insurgent in the hopes of inciting the empire's wrath away from her son.When Adrianus eventually learned about his mother's intentions, it was too late. His mother was labeled a traitor to the nation of Garlemald and executed immediately. This horrific occurrence is what led him into the Dark. After months spent communicating with the malevolent spirit trapped within the soul stone, Adrianus ultimately gave in and agreed to Queen Mab's terms. He changed his identity to "Sine Fortuna," or Without Luck, and his first act was to slay everyone in the Castrum.
